A Love Letter to VTOL VR: Producer and Director
A Love Letter to VTOL VR is a cinematic trailer created as a tribute to the VTOL VR community and everything that makes the game special. The project brought together over twenty volunteers across two months of coordinated filming, choreography, and post-production, resulting in the most ambitious and meaningful video I’ve ever produced for my channel.
As producer and director, I led every stage of the production: coordinating flight choreography, capturing in-game footage, managing contributors, and overseeing the edit from storyboard to final render. The goal was to capture everything that makes VTOL VR compelling while delivering it with the cinematic polish of a professional trailer. The result represents the intersection of my creative vision, leadership, and technical production skills.
Production began when I discovered a little-known mod called Cinematic Unity Explorer (CUE), which had the potential to completely change how cinematics could be filmed in VTOL VR. At the time, CUE’s VR implementation was unstable, undocumented, and essentially unusable.
Over two weeks of intensive testing, experimentation, and troubleshooting, I developed a reliable workflow that finally made smooth, cinematic shots possible, unlocking a level of visual storytelling the game had never seen before.
Once filming began, it quickly became clear that the project’s scope would require more than one person to manage. I recruited two co-directors, Dubya and Champagne, and together we divided the critical roles of camera operation, volunteer coordination, and shot direction. With their support, I was able to focus on the overall artistic vision of the trailer.
The final video represents hundreds of combined hours of work and the collective effort of a dedicated community. It stands as my proudest piece of content: a project that pushed technical boundaries, demanded real leadership, and ultimately delivered a cinematic love letter to the game and its players.
