Luxe Nova: Stage Tech Captain

At Luxe Nova, I lead technical operations for immersive virtual shows that blend theater, music, and digital artistry. As Stage Tech Captain, I program and operate lighting systems in Onyx, coordinate with performers and production leads, and ensure every event runs seamlessly. My role bridges the gap between the performers on stage and my team of talented stage techs, translating creative vision into reality.

Work begins well before each show, when performers submit their performances to the production board. Once approved, stage techs start crafting the visuals, which are split into two components: the screen visual (video content displayed in the background) and the lighting visual (programmed lighting cues for the performance). This process allows us to synchronize visuals and lighting seamlessly, creating a fully immersive experience for the audience.

Screen visuals are built in DaVinci Resolve, blending animation, color, and timing to complement the music and choreography. This is achieved through a mix of stock assets and bespoke Fusion compositions, creating a unique atmosphere for each performance.

Once the screen visual is complete, work begins on the lighting visual. Lighting cues are programmed in Onyx to match the performance, with each cue carefully synchronized to both the screen visual and the performer’s movement.

Musical timing and lighting cues are mapped in Cakewalk, where MIDI macros trigger the programmed cues in Onyx. The resulting data is recorded through a GridNode, which encodes the DMX signal into luminance values that control the lights.

During the performance, the video player runs the combined visual and grid data in-world, and the lights move exactly as programmed. This approach ensures every performance is perfectly synchronized, repeatable, and immersive, delivering a polished experience for both performers and audience members.
